Who wants to go get a puuuuuuppy!?!
Don’t Drink And Buy Puppies of the Day: West Village pet stores are putting the kibosh on drunk-puppy buying over concerns for the pets’ well-being.
“They come from there and say ‘let’s stop by to see the puppies’,” says Le Petite Puppy proprietor Fernanda Moritz, referring to inebriated patrons who stumble into her shop from one of several nearby bars. Moritz told DNAinfo.com about a Chihuahua she sold to a drunk woman that nearly died in her care before being returned the following day. “We took it to the vet and he found five pills in the dog’s stomach,” she recalled. “It almost overdosed.”
Across the way at Citipups, where a similar policy has been implemented, manager Leandro Jacoby said he too was familiar with the “buyer’s remorse” of intoxicated shoppers. A couple who purchased an English Bull Dog and a Miniature Pinscher for $3,500 returned them the next morning and apologized. “They were just having fun.”
Since then, the store has put in place a sobriety test for its customers. “We have to tell them to come back the next day,” Jacoby says. “[A]nd most of the time they never come back.”
